EVALUATION QUESTON 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Q5: How did you attract/address your audience?
This is my evaluation question 5 answered using the Youtube annotation tool.

We don't have any trailers, posters, DVD sleeves, social media and full websites. These are key aspects of distribution as they market the film and creates buzz amongst the targeted audience. I f we had more time we would have utilised all of these to help the success of our film. Many films even have teaser trailer before the release of the main trailer for example Pitch Perfect 2 ( teaser trailer). Working Title and their distributors can afford to spend more on marketing, as they need to at their high budget to help make back a profit, but even Indies can do this well if they’re smart for example Le Donk and Scor-zay-zee's downloadable Xmas cards.

Included is how we have attracted our audience by using:

  • mise-en-scene
  • music
  • voiceover
  • character
  • locations
  • titles
  • framing
  • shot types
  • depth of field

These annotations were tested using the Chrome and Safari browsers, but there may be issues with others.

  1. Every Eval Q title needs to be clearer; the short versions I use in top links list is a good guide: http://asmediafilmopening.blogspot.co.uk/
Start post by setting out the Q in full

At this point, lacking on layout and illustrative imagery - both need to be consistently provided
Sub-headings help with this, with blank lines between paragraphs, and some use where appropriate of bullet lists
e.g.: CLOTHING; SOUNDTRACK; GENRE + HYBRIDITY; BBFC RATING + LANGUAGE/SEXUAL CONTENT

This is very brief as it stands, and provides very limited denotation from your text to back up points, plus zero clips/screenshots to illustrate points made. You're not limited to screenshots: taking a pic of costume and typing points around it, using arrows, is another way of adding to this. This or Q4 (you could also combine the two) is also the best choice for a YouTube annotations video, but you need the actual final cut for this - OR re-editing the (near) final cut to add titles, zoom in on aspects etc

Other issues to address (these overlap):
SEXUALITY; INTERTEXTUALITY; VOICEOVER; ANCHORING THE CENTRAL PROTAGONIST + IDENTIFIYING WITH HER; NARRATIVE ENIGMA; USE OF GRAPHICS; EDITING STYLE

  2. As with my earlier comment:
start EVERY Eval Q with the actual, full Q set out clearly
ALWAYS embed the video - let me know when you have and I'll have a look at this

If any additional points do crop up, with the final cut still to be completed, just add details below the video

  3. This is good. You need to add a clear note above the video stating that To view the annotations you will need to frequently press pause, as I couldn't fit them all in without limiting the on-screen time for each!
If you can, have someone sit with you to go through the spelling of each (e.g. 'Shaun' Meadows = Shane)
Two aspects you should consider - just add details below the video or edit annotations: (1) verisimilitude (2) female/feminist
1: Idents establish this, and exist to market the companies involved (2) FemGaze, female director, opening on female character...
Re Harri - flatcap is surely a PLAYFUL, ironic (postmodern) signifier of Yorkshire? He's a hipster stereotype, which has social class connotations, and the Yorkshire stereotype is very much oppositional to this primarily Southern, middle/upper class stereotype
The note on edits/cinematography at 2:14 should be placed where such action occurs
    Final titles – its non-normative (or counter-hegemonic)
